Don't get sloppy
Published: 21 September, 2009
Slippers headed the national headlines recently when the charity Age Concern launched a Slipper Amnesty Campaign. Elderly people were urged to swap their potentially worn out and dangerous slippers for a safer new pair. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has in the past warned of that sloppy slippers are a contributory factor in many home falls, particularly among the elderly.
Research has shown that a third of all people over 65 will trip or fall each year, with even higher rates for those above the age of 75. These accidents are often caused by worn slippers and, unfortunately, it is the most likely accident that people of this age group will have.
Accidents can happen so easily, but many falls can be avoided by wearing correctly fitted, supportive footwear. Around the home people do not wish to wear shoes that are generally supportive, but prefer the convenience of slippers which have little or no support.
With these potential dangers in mind DB Shoes, in close consultation with medical practitioners, has developed a special 'house shoe' designed to help reduce falls in the home. Combining the comfort of the traditional slipper with the increased support and stability of a shoe, it is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
The wide flat sole provides a stable base for walking. The uppers have a stiffener built into the back panel that supports and cradles the heel safely and comfortably. The touch fastening straps allow for easy access, yet can be adjusted simply and quickly to ensure a perfect fit. Available in variable (EE-4E fitting) and 6E fittings, the 'easy b' House Shoe (RPP £25 to £30) also incorporates a shoe insole to reduce torsional flexibility.
This is an ongoing problem, creating a new market in which retailers can become involved in providing a solution, helping their elderly customers stay safe within their homes. For further information on House Shoes or any other DB product, please contact DB Shoes on: 01933 359217, www.dbshoes.co.uk
Of course, you don't have to be old to wear slippers. At the end of a long day, it's a lovely feeling to slip into something that feels warm, cosy and comfortable. Increasingly however, consumer demand dictates that the slipper should be more than just a cosy slip-on. The modern day house shoe needs to look good, feel comfortable and cushioned, have a non-slip sole that can be worn outdoors, be washable and above all be value for money.
The Padders' ladies and men's slippers perform highly on all counts and with their innovative memory foam insoles, that shape to the contours of your feet to help reduce painful pressure points - they deliver a slipper that everyone wants to wear.
The uppers are soft and warm - made from Microsuede for ladies and Microsuede, Woolmix, Corduroy or leather for men. The rubber sole unit is very sturdy and durable and vanilla fragranced to help eliminate any potential odours. The heel counters are quite stiff which supports the ankle and assists balance; many have adjustment and touch and close straps, which aids stability.
Available in a wide variety of styles - traditional and contemporary, in numerous colourways. Ladies range prices from £18.95 RRP (£7.75 trade) to £24.95 RRP (£10.50 trade). Men's from £18.95RR (£7.95 trade) to £29.95 RRP (£12.95 trade).
