Reflecting its increased focus on the rapidly growing e-commerce and home shopping sectors, FKI Logistex® has announced the successful completion of a £6 million project for the Internet shoe and apparel retailer - Zappos.com®. This contract called for a global leader in integrated material handling solutions to design, supply, install and integrate an extensive automated handling system at a major new primary distribution centre.
Featuring an end-to-end, integrated solution designed by FKI Logistex to boost product handling efficiency and capacity significantly and help Zappos.com meet increasing customer demand, the systems encompass receiving, pre-sort, put-away, picking, packing and shipping.
"Zappos.com is a major e-commerce success story," says Jerry Woodhouse, European Managing Director, FKI Logistex. "By focusing on delivering value and excellent investment returns, we are achieving growing success in the expanding home shopping sector. FKI Logistex is proving time and again it has the integration expertise and materials handling technologies necessary to provide effective solutions to meet this market’s demanding performance criteria on output, reliability, accuracy and ultra-fast order fulfilment."
FKI Logistex began work on the Zappos.com installation in late June 2006, with the extensive project being fast-tracked through to recent completion. The company was awarded the contract through Arup® - the London-based global design and business consultants.
The new Zappos.com warehouse and distribution site incorporates a variety of FKI Logistex equipment including UniSort® IV belt-powered pop-up wheel sortation systems, high-speed UniSort XV sliding-shoe sortation systems, saw tooth merges, Accuzone® transfer conveyors and Print-and-Apply Modules™.
The sub-systems are integrated by the FKI Logistex Warehouse Optimiser™ software with its graphical user interface. The solution includes FKI Logistex Accuglide™ conveyor, Accuzone motorized roller conveyor, and the FKI Logistex Answer System™ monitoring software. Vehicle loading and unloading is via a series of telescopic boom conveyors.
Providing appropriate solutions for a wide variety of applications, FKI Logistex is a market leader in sortation systems offering a wide choice of reliable, low-maintenance models. Linear sorters, such as the Unisort® Sliding Shoe Sorters chosen by Zappos.com, combine quiet, accurate, gentle sortation with the highest throughput rates in the industry.
The Accuglide conveyor chosen by Zappos.com is widely acknowledged to be the first-choice powered system for handling high-speed transit case output without line pressure. The key performance benefit provided by zero-pressure, live roller accumulation is the avoidance of costly and time-consuming line stoppages and start-ups.
The Zappos.com installation is backed by one of the largest Customer Support and Service organisations in the industry, with FKI Logistex technicians and engineers on call worldwide, 365 days per year to provide rapid response and back-up and allow companies like Zappos.com to keep their customer promise.
Zappos.com was founded in 1999 and recorded £195 million in gross global revenue in 2005.
