Prima Solutions Adventure Challenge

Published:  11 February, 2010

Staff from across the fashion industry are teaming up to support leading overseas aid agency CARE International by taking part in the Prima Solutions Adventure Challenge, supported by Footwear Today, on 22 May.

The challenge, taking place in Exmoor National Park, will see teams hike, bike and canoe a marathon distance in ten hours. It’s a demanding task, but efforts are worthwhile- all funds raised will support CARE’s work helping 59 million people in 70 countries find a route out of poverty.

Care’s work

CARE is currently assisting the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake on 12th January. This was the worst earthquake in the region for 200 hundred years, affecting 3 million people- a third of the population. An estimated 70,000 have died, with fears this could rise to 200,000.

CARE responded to the disaster immediately. The organisation has 133 staff based in Haiti, and has sent shelter and logistics specialists and a gender-based violence advisor to assist the response effort.

CARE began distributing aid within days, including water purification tablets, meals, high-energy biscuits, mattresses, hygiene kits, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, jerry cans and kitchen sets. CARE is working alongside other NGOs as members of the DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee), to ensure aid reaches the right places. CARE is already making plans for its post-disaster assistance in Haiti to last at least three years.

How you can help

CARE Challenge Manager, Neil Munro, says “People are often moved by poverty and suffering they see on the news, but it’s difficult to know how to help. The Prima Solutions Adventure Challenge offers people in the fashion industry the opportunity to turn their good will into concrete results, supporting CARE’s work not just in Haiti but in over 70 poor countries worldwide. It’s a chance to challenge yourself and challenge poverty.”

The event is sponsored by Prima Solutions, leading suppliers of IT solutions to the apparel industry. Because of this, all funds raised will directly support CARE’s work. Ninety pence per pound raised for CARE goes to support poverty fighting programmes overseas- making every bead of sweat worthwhile!
