Ravel succumbs to high-street competition
Published: 01 June, 2007
Clarks is to phase out its Ravel brand, which first appeared in the 1960s, as the family-owned footwear firm seeks to rejuvenate itself.
Ravel, one of the first stores to offer affordable fashion footwear, has faced tough competition from clothing retailers introducing their own shoe ranges. Chains such as Dolcis and Shellys have also had declining profits; at New Look and Primark, shoe sales are rising. Some of Ravel's 50 stores are to close but others will be converted to the parent company's brand. Employees will transfer to Clarks shops and about 20 jobs will be lost at Ravel's Somerset HQ.
