This year the International Golf Championship of the Shoe, Leather & Allied Trades returns to Wales after many years, and this time to The Vale Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort, on the Hensol Castle Estate, in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The facilities at the Vale include two 18 hole Championship Golf courses that have hosted several PGA golf tournaments, and provide a true test for golfers of all abilities. In addition to the four star hotel, there is an excellent Leisure centre, and a floodlit driving range. The Clubhouse facilities are also first class.
Last year about 110 golfers from all branches of the trade attended the Championship at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, the home of the English Golf Union. Shoe manufacturers, Retailers, Agents, Wholesalers, and Distributors, and representatives of the Leather Industries, all competed for the array of Silver Trophies for both Regional and National Competitions, along with Vistors competing for their own Trophies. As a result a total of £16,000 was donated to the Trade Charities, the main beneficiary being the Footwear Benevolent Society.
The main event is after the International match, England & Wales V Scotland & Ireland, and is played over 36 holes, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Ladies and Gentlemen are eligible to play, as long as they have a recognised golf handicap and their business is at least 75% in the Trade. Visitors are most welcome and compete for the Marlone Trophy, also over 36 holes. There is a Scratch Trophy for the low handicaps, and the main event is a handicapped Stableford format.
Over 100 golfers are expected to participate, many from Ireland, and Europe, and the main social event is the Informal Trade Banquet on the Thursday evening, June 28th, when Brian Voyle Morgan will be the Guest Speaker and entertainer.
Entry forms will be sent out early February, and entries close mid April, full details are also available along with an entry form on our website www.shoeandleathergolf-international.co.uk . In 2008 the event returns to Lancashire, at Hillside Golf Club and Formby Hall.
