Katherine Hamnett is to remove all of her organic and fair trade clothing range out of Tesco, following disgreement over the merchandising and the tight distribution of her Choose Love brand. Hamnett, a pioneer for ethical and green causes said she was "incredibly dissapointed" with the tie up with Tesco and vowed never to renew it when it ends this month.
The "Choose Love" range was made available in 40 Tesco stores and Hamnett felt that the merchandising was not strong enough for the brand. With the hope for increased ethical awareness, as farmers who work with organic cotton can raise their income by 50%, Hamnett was really dissapointed with the efforts by Tesco, coming to the conclusion that they simply wanted to appear enviromentally and ethically aware.
This news comes following several other fashion retailers being questioned for their true support to ethical issues. The Kate Moss range at Topshop, for instance, is accused of using Mauritius based supplier Compagnie Mauricienne, which had been accused of using slave labour and Primark, Gap, Matalan and H & M have also been exposed for using slave labour deals in the East and Far East.
