Gola Classics, the original British sports brand, were the first to use the word trainer as an abbreviation of the training shoe back in 1977. This was confirmed by BBC series Balderdash & Piffle after conducting a nationwide search for the term ‘trainer’ and has been entered into the English dictionary.
