MODA Review : Moda Behaviour
Moda Footwear, running from Sunday 18th to Tuesday 20th February, is the UK’s only national footwear exhibition. The show has a reputation of delivering a thoroughly comprehensive exhibition with some of the greatest brands in the footwear market turning up season after season.

As more brands than ever participate in the footwear section, and a greater array of retailers and buyers turn up for the event, which brands particularly stood out?

Moda has seen significant changes over the last few years, a takeover by the prestigious ITE Group, an overhaul in the show’s layout in answer to the demand for a "lifestyle" show and last, but by no means least an improved interest from buyers and retailers. This year’s show was no exception; a majority of stands were busy and bustling, the range of exhibitors were varied and the arrangement of Moda Menswear, Womenswear and Footwear as one large event whetted the appetites of those retailers keen to offer that "one stop shop". In terms of interest, Sunday stood out as the busiest day with perhaps a quieter feel over the next few days. The quality of buyer was, however, positive, and a wealth of written orders were completed from stand to stand.

It is not just show officials who claim this was one of the best events to date. A majority of exhibitors were happy with sales figures from the show, and will continue their support; "For JBI Moda was a very successful show. We did as much if not more business than last year which, as people keep saying trade isn’t great, was excellent news" says David Buchanan, Group Marketing Manager for The Sutton Group "I think there was more confidence amongst retailers than in the Autumn and our collections seemed to tick the right boxes with buyers, which was reflected in the volume of orders taken and new accounts opened. A good positive start to the year for us."

Even those exhibitors not quite as happy with the results were philosophical about the event, "The show does not seem to be as well supported than in previous years" highlights Andy Cockayne, Sales Director for Hush Puppies " Saying that, the quality of accounts have been very good, we really cannot complain."

Chic Feet

Moda is known for its variety of exhibitors, not least of all the number of high fashion styles on offer.

Unze by Shalimar Shoes have been one of the most famous success stories to date in the UK. Much ahead of its targets, Unzè has 23 franchised and company operated stores and the first one outside UK is now up and running in the heart of Hague, The Netherlands. This seasons Moda saw some beautiful knee high versions of the original glitzy sandals that the brand are famous for. The company is also offering high quality crystal jewellery that represents the glamour of Shalimar.

"We have been selling well across the board" said Khurum Saleem, Managing Director "We have expanded our clientele to retailers who stock real top end fashion, hence why we now offer fully leather spec versions of the shoes."

Ikon are really branching out into the young male fashion category, particularly with the endorsement by up and coming indie rock bands. This has broadened their appeal and marketability to a younger clientele. We loved their "Ikon Originals" selection (with higher price points) and some of the boy’s styles that had sole well at the show.

Fiona McGuiness are another exciting brand to hit the stands at Moda, with a gorgeous array of vamp ladies shoes at reasonable prices. We loved a gorgeous array of chunky covered platform boots and shoes.

Rombah Wallace presented a great range of vintage styles that appeal to a broad market, we especially liked men’s Cuban heeled styles and some fabulous suede shoes with silver piping. Per Tu, equally, had a beautifully designed stand and their usual influx of interest at the event, we particularly noticed concealed platforms in croc leather and in exciting range of electric blue sandals.

Poetic license experienced great success at this seasons show, with one retailer investing in 34 styles on their stand. From the same designers as the Irregular Choice brand, they have great potential for further growth in the future.

Lunar were one of the biggest success stories of the event. "We have been incredibly busy" Says Martin Rye, Managing Director "We were expecting worse than last season, what with the state of trade but we have done really well". Although boots were incredibly popular it was the glitzy sandals that stole the show.

Softly Softly

A distinct trait of traditionally "comfort" brands at this season’s show was their ability to incorporate comfort and fashion into each shoe. Caprice were no stranger to this fact. The range, (keeping some of the more

traditional styles for their staple clientele) was unrecognisable for the sheer amount of fashion forward options on the stand. It is perhaps this factor which enticed more visitors to their stand than any other. Styles included beautiful rouched ankle boots, riding boots and a great range of stretch boots made form the micro fibre and leather.

Hush Puppies are similarly equated with quality and comfort, but many of the ranges on stand this season rival any younger, more fashion forward brand on show. Although comfort styles are still a staple product, ladies styles included heeled fashion courts, beautiful calf length boots and a range of funky pumps. Men’s styles included fantastic brogues with slimmer lasts for a younger look.

Emotion boasts a 26% rise in sales this year and Moda was no different for them, featuring many modifications from popular old styles, their bestseller was the knee high style "Peggy" in black and camel.

Ara have also seen an overhaul of traditional brand identity by striking with their two brands-Ara and Jenny by Ara. They have changed their photography and marketing and as well as the usual; comfort and fit they also provide a broader range with more style.

Childs Play

Gore Tex held on to its popularity on the Primigi stand who presented several funky boys styles and pretty muted pink girls options, and Richter were equally as busy with fashion, school and practical ranges. Their styles featured many more leather lined product for a quality feel.

New and Exciting

Celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, Riva had a fine selection of quality styles on show. The Roberto Grevi range is brand new for the brand, a collection designed exclusively for Riva Made from the best materials for the most discerning customer, the range produced a great deal of excitement at the event, we loved snakeskin ballerinas that were fully leather lined.

Euroleathers presenting a real revolution in add on sales with their exciting Soft Flip, a gel cushion made especially for sandals with toe posts. The product takes the qualities of ordinary gel cushion but with the toe peg, protecting the sensitive gap between the toes from rubbing.
