A star struck Henry Harington chills out in a pair of Skechers’ Faris loafers

use this one rsz_rsz_ringo_starr_skechers_s01r_bts-0580Even in this age of the coolest of cool dudes, the former Beatle, Ringo Starr, is so laid-back that one may be forgiven for tripping over him as one might do a carpet! It’s not going too far to say that the rockstar defines “cool”, that he is an icon of the relaxed in the frenetic world of celebrity.

Indeed, you couldn’t get greater recognition of Ringo’s relaxed style than when, in January 2014, his musical legacy was celebrated when the David Lynch Foundation honoured him with the “Lifetime of Peace & Love Award”. As Ringo still uses the 1960’s trademark “peace sign”, raising two fingers showing the underside of the hand, it seems even more fitting.

After all he was the member of the Fab Four who seemed to be least consumed by angst. And, his patient tones, as the narrator of the adventures of Thomas the Tank Engine, created the calm atmosphere for the bedtime stories that would swoon children to sleep faster than the Fat Controller could reach the end of the station platform.

Indeed telling the Thomas the Tank Engine tales introduced Ringo to a new generation, a group who (unbelievably!) might not even have heard of the Beatles but who are now grown up. It is this cross-generational appeal that decided Skechers to ask Ringo to be the “face” of their shoes – if that is not too anatomically complicated a concept to get your head around!

Ringo is still drumming, writing songs and singing them on tours, but his relaxed demeanour is in complete harmony with the properties Skechers want to promote with their RelaxedFIT range of shoes.

Skechers main theme in expanding their Relaxed FIT offering to appeal to all age groups is the word “comfort”, spearheaded with a poster advertisement of a picture of a very relaxed-looking Ringo Starr and the slogan, “ROCK OUT IN COMFORT”.

I was given a pair of Skechers Superior Faris shoes to put the qualities they claim for the expanded range to the test. The Faris is what used to be called a “loafer”. But, in these times of politically correct oversensitivity, it is possible that the description of a shoe as “a loafer” may be unacceptable for its couch potato implications. However, in its heyday for loafer was the hallmark of the relaxed and elegant shoe – a description with which I am quite happy to endow the Faris.

The Faris, and other shoes in the RelaxedFIT range, offer a wide fit together with Skechers “Memory Foam” in the footbed which, together, are the hallmark of their campaign to promote the range as a comfortable choice. The fact that the RelaxedFIT shoes have “MemoryFoam” is not the only reason they are clever! You know some small cars are surprisingly roomy inside, well, my Superior Faris shoes, do not look big, they look like a pair of smart, conventional shoes, but Skechers have cunningly designed them to have a “roomier fit”.

Quite where the space comes from I am not sure because the footbed has another innovation, the aforementioned “Memory Foam”. The Memory Foam carefully moulds to the contours of one’s feet, remembering the form for the lifetime if the shoe. Or to put it another way, as someone who has struggled to find this level of comfort in a shoe, “What a &@£#% relief!”
Like many shoes in the range the Faris is constructed from relaxed-looking, durable canvas styles with contrasting colour stitching and sole. In these days when ripped jeans and faded T-shirts are de rigeur for the fashionistas, whether at home, on stage or at a posh gathering, some of the RelaxedFIT range are designed to be more flexible and appear worn to give them a more casual look.

Perhaps we can’t all be as chilled out as Ringo Starr, but investing in Skechers RelaxedFIT shoes certainly means that we are taking steps in the right direction.
